What is chromium?
Chromium is a steel-grey, lustrous, hard and brittle metallic element found primarily in the chromite, which is composed of iron, chromium, and oxygen. Chromium is used primarily in the metallurgical industry, to produce ferrochrome and some nonferrous alloys, which in turn are used in production of stainless steel.
Other applications of chromium are the steel alloys, plating of metals, pigments, leather processing, catalysts, surface treatments, and refractories. The major world producers of chrome ore are South Africa, Kazakhstan, Turkey, and India.
Stainless steel production is the major end use of ferrochromium. Stainless steel industry performance largely determines chromium industry demand worldwide.
